De slaapbehoefte van een hond.

A dog’s need for sleep.

An (adult) dog sleeps 12 to 14 hours a day, which means that a dog sleeps for half the day. A dog's sleep affects their physical and mental health. During sleep, the stimuli from that day are processed. But what other effect does sleep have on your dog? We will tell you more about it in this blog.

Sleep pattern

An (adult) dog sleeps 12 to 14 hours a day, while a puppy sleeps about 20 hours a day. A dog's sleep pattern varies by age and breed. Dogs are polyphasic sleepers, which means they sleep both at night and during the day. A dog does not sleep continuously like a human but spreads its sleep throughout the day. Your loyal four-legged friend also enters REM sleep (rapid eye movement), the stage in which you dream. Your dog may dream about running through a meadow or chasing the neighbor's cat. A dog spends only 10% of its sleep in dreamland.

Various factors

Several factors affect your dog's sleep. Age plays an important role. Puppies and older dogs sleep more than adult dogs. Puppies need sleep because they are growing, while older dogs need their energy because their physical capacity decreases. Health problems also affect sleep. If your dog sleeps too much, this may be a sign of health problems. Different dog breeds also have different energy levels, so one breed may need more sleep than another.

Your dog's sleep is therefore extremely important. That is why it is also important to provide your dog with a comfortable place to sleep. At Lex&Max, we have a huge selection, including a comfortable bed for your dog.
